Members of the Society enjoyed a fantastic visit to Rome in May. The scientific and social programmes were entertaining and extremely well received. In the scientific programme, we enjoyed four guest speakers from Italy who spoke to us in superb English. The majority of the content was supplied by home-grown talent from the South West, and the quality was exceptional.
In the social programme we visited a variety of Roman sights, enhanced greatly by a superb service from our guide. As well as the Colloseum and Vatican, we enjoyed supper and cabaret in a tiny theatre, and the cruise on the swollen and rapidly flowing Tiber certainly raised some pulses. Finally, returning to England was very nearly disrupted by volcanic ash – our flight was one of the last allowed into Bristol that day.
