Trainee Bulletin December 2009

SASWR Trainee Bulletin

It’s been another busy year for the society, two superb meetings (Cirencester & Exeter), a rapidly expanding trainee population, posters at conferences, more prizes and awards and if that was not enough next year promises even more with the international meeting in Rome. As another 10 years draws to a close doesn’t it make you wonder where you’ll be at the end of the next decade?

Exeter Meeting Autumn 2009

For those of you that attended you’ll know what a great meeting it was! We had more trainees there then at any previous SASWR event, and the programme included a vast amount of interesting and practice changing lectures. Epidurals for general surgery, how to manage a PDPH, ultrasound for obese obstetric patients, peri-operative pain management for patients with existing opioid use, just some examples of the 2 day event.

The trainee prize (£1000) was hotly contested with Gemma Crossingham winning overall for her video based workplace assessment project. Chris Bourdeax and Alice Braga were runners up for their projects; sodium bicarbonate & ICP management and guidelines for anti-thrombosis management in paediatrics, respectively.

Ben Howes was awarded the President’s Prize by Dr McAteer for his contribution to the society. We were all told that Ben donated the £1000 he’d won the year before, in the Trainees Prize, to the SATS airway group he is a founder member of. Many congratulations to him, not many trainees get this prize at all.

Posters were submitted and displayed at the meeting. These proved exceptionally popular amongst trainees presenting and consultants coming and viewing the work that goes on in the region. This is fast growing to be a great meeting for research, audits or case presentations. Any thoughts of your poster for the next meeting?

Ross Davis Adventure Bursary

Two projects have received a Bursary this year. One for a trip to Cape Town to practice Paediatric Anaesthesia and the other to buy a mountain bike for a trainee going on an OOPE in Canada (even a small idea can win you an award).

Forthcoming events…..

Rome

Wed 12th – Sat 15th May 2010

This is an international meeting in conjunction with Professor Piacevoli and the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care in Rome, as such your posters & presentations would achieve a much higher status on your CV! If you have any research or any work you wish to submit as a poster – get thinking now!

Submission, in the form of an abstract, can be emailed to the SASWR Honorary Secretary (honsec@saswr.org.uk). They will all be judged and the outstanding abstracts will be offered to present at the conference to win the International Trainee Prize, and a monetary award of £200. Any submission achieving the required standard will be invited to present a poster at the meeting. Deadline for applications is the end of March.

On top of all these glittering CV points will be an entertaining and educational meeting and a superb social calendar, including visits to the Tivoli gardens, Sistine Chapel, a cruise on the Tiber and much more – including the dinners! More details see the website, look out for the posters in your departments, or alternatively email myself. (DHurford@doctors.org.uk)

Journal

Don’t forget the SASWR journal, Anaesthesia Points West. All submissions can be made electronically to editor@saswr.org.uk

That’s all for now. If you have any thoughts, queries or suggestions for the society please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you wish to join (and quite frankly with a society that offers this much for only £20 a year why wouldn’t you want to?), or want more details of Rome see the website.

Best wishes
